fledgling converting a bus

Post by rosa kilgore » Sun Sep 30, 2007 2:29 pm

bob, your site is awesome and amazing! thanks so much!

i am buying a small bus to live in and have just begun researching. i want to be as green as a beginner can as i take on this new living arrangement. everyone's first question to me has been- what about the toilet? so, i guess that is my first question... i have read about the compost toilets and about anaerobic digestion. i am in love with the idea of using methane gas to run something (a tiny fridge?) but not sure if one dog and one person can create enough waste. any starter ideas? thanks!

Hi Rosa,

You and your dog can't generate enough waste to run a fridge, but you and your dog plus a bunch of leaves, yard clippings and/or vegetable scraps, etc. possibly could.

On the other hand, building operating and maintaining such a digester might also be more costly than just buying electricity (or propane). Are these options available where you are? And, if so, how much do they cost? (And where do they come from -- nuclear power plant? coal? hydro?) Those are all things to consider.
