I think a thread about various options of biofilter media would be interesting. Great idea, cezar, Check out http://www.biorealis.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=128&start=9 for some discussion about media. I was particularly interested in the do it yourself ribbon. I had the same idea while cleanin...

What is the basis for the biogas yield from horse manure as shown on the calculator?
Hi Alastair,
Glad you could join us. That is a frequent question. See http://biorealis.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=74 about 4 posts down.
(I should definitely add a FAQ hereabouts.)

...as the 20L trickle filter contains "aquarium wool" which is catching the larger suspended solids in solution, I suspect I'll have to clean it soon the rate of water flow through it has slowed quite a bit, I now have a continuous puddle on the surface all time now. It sounds like you might want t...

An afterthought. Going back to the page where I describe the biofilter, I note that I did not show ribbon media that I added to the system later. I put it in the downtube in the settling tank (2nd drum). It is commonly available from aquarium or pond supply sources. I'm not sure it is necessarily th...

Good questions, David. I think I'd be inclined to just let it keep going as is for a while longer, and wait to see if it clears up as the sludge blanket grows and biological populations mature. Assuming that the solids in the 3rd tank are settleable -- i.e. not in colloidal suspension, I would think...

I've been experimenting with learning how to include video on my website. Here is a link to a short (and unedited) video clip showing routine maintenance.

Thanks for the background, David. I think we will be hearing about and reading about similar situations all over the world with increasing frequency. A few years ago I put together a quick & dirty water catchment system calculator aimed at designing water catchment systems for dry side lots on Hawai...

Question about the "20L" drum weir in the anerobic drum/chamber, I currently have the water about half way up the holes is this ok, or must it flow of the edge of the holes? The intent is to make a 'notched weir'. The idea is to distribute the overflow to multiple points, so that velocity through a...

How often does the aerobic chamber(20 litre bucket) need cleaning typically? This particular incarnation has been in operation since September 2006. I haven't cleaned it yet, and it is still working well. I'm going to guess maybe once/year? I'll send you some pictures of my configuration, when I ha...

1. Where is the water taken from in the last stage? I have a pump with float switch mounted near the top of the tank. Note the two callouts on the drawing that say "Pump (Not Shown) On" and "Pump Off". (These added details & more will be included in forthcoming book...) 2. Is it worth installing a ...

Does the effluent naturally rise and overflow, is this part of the process? Yes. Every liter of new input displaces an equal amount of effluent. If you wanted to use the effluent separately or on a different timing cycle from the feed cycle, you would need to add a storage tank. That wouldn't be un...

Is it possible to take the methane and store it in another polyethylene tank after proccessing, or is this to dangerous. As you note, the risk (and cost and complexity) go up with the quantity of gas that needs to be stored. To minimize the risk, I think I'd try to find ways to use it as soon possi...

Also I want to make this as easily operated as possible, especially when it comes to collecting the fertilizer. I agree, that that is a key issue. It sounds like you will want to have two input sources here -- toilet(s) for human waste, and some sort of tank or barrel that you can stir and add wate...

My initial guess, without knowing more, is that something like this simple inexpensive design from Francisco Aguilar might be most appropriate. Where my two-stage system is relatively inex...

It is unclear to me why the water is simply not driven back out the hole by which it entered The holes (yes you are correct, they are for letting water into the container) are located below the invert of the elbow on the riser pipe. So as the air forces the water level in the container down, it is ...
