I've never tried that idea, but I would think that adding CO2 to the digester would have the effect of lowering pH. CO2 is fairly soluble, combining with water to produce carbonic acid. Which would require additional buffer capacity. Recirculation of biogas, however, is fairly common. In addition to...

"In the second sketch of the digester the container you replaced jugs 2&3 with is the gas collector you just explained, right?" Right. Also, how should the Ph level be checked, and how should stuff be added ... without letting air in?" I was assuming that this would be a batch feed digester, meanin...

Hi Hereford, "Scrubbers" is a big topic. There are a variety of different types, used to remove a variety of unwanted gases and/or odors. Not to mention a variety of sizes. When you say "big" biogas projects, what does that mean? There are also a wide variety of factors which affect the production o...

chuckcat4, if you are interested in a large dairy farm biodigester, you probably can't do better than with the info and resources available from Agstar. Have you reviewed it? To start from scratch, experimenting with 55 gal drum-size digester would be reinventing the wheel, in my opinion. But if you...

re pH monitoring & maintenance... I'm not sure what you mean by "open the digester". Do you mean taking the lid off? Or just opening a valve on an access port? If the latter, it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure the pipe extends down into the liquid, so that no gas escapes when you open it. How...

Hi Irvin, The first thing I'd comment on is the electric blanket/voltage regulator idea. You also mentioned insulation and ambient temperature which may drop below freezing. Of course these are all interrelated. Whether or not the electric blanket will be able to maintain the desired temperature und...

The USEPA AgSTAR program is probably one of the best sources of information available for large digesters suitable for a dairy farm of that size. They also have a free computer program that you can use to determine the feasibility of a biogas digester for your farm. What did you have in mind for a '...

Did you try local pet/aquarium stores or a garden supply that has drip irrigation tubing? If no luck there, try U.S. Plastics . Go to "Tubing & Fittings" from the drop down list, then pick "Kynar, Nylon and Polypropylene Tube Fittings", for a variety of fittings. The one I used to connect to the bot...

Sewage sludge, (contact your local municipal WWTP), septic tank sludge (contact a local septic tank pumping service), material taken from bottom of barnyard or manure pit (if you are on or near a farm?) In short, any well-rotted, organically rich, liquid-saturated source. If you can wait long enough...

Interesting. Where are you with your r&d? Anything you can share? Or is it necessarily closed because of the nature of your target market. I'm somewhat familiar with CELSS -- at least have reviewed some of the literature -- and was peripherally involved with wastewater management systems at the Amun...

Here's a sketch of the toilet chute showing the funnel. So far, what seems about right is an 8" dia funnel flattened into an oval so that it fills a little more than 1/2" the diameter of the chute, (say about 7"?), mounted about 3"-4" down from the top. What do you think? any consensus of opinion --...

"Urine separation for females? Is the funnel really no problem?" Good question, Shawn. I don't know yet. I've bought three different sizes of funnel, heated, bent & attached them at different heights & angles inside the chute, discussed the issues with my wife. Seems to me that the trick is to get ...

Hmmm... don't know what to think. The O.D. of my 3" pipe is about 3-1/2". The I.D. of the bottle at the widest point fits snugly into a 4" diameter PVC coupling which measures about 4-1/4". I cut the top off the bottle just above where it starts to curve in, so the I.D. is about 3-5/8" -- just big e...

As an example of a minimum cost, low tech solution, here is a link to an excellent paper with instructions and photos describing HOW TO INSTALL A POLYETHYLENE BIOGAS PLANT -- a very simple plug-flow digester suitable for a rural family with a few animals, in the tropics.

Hola Luis, Whew! Many questions. I'll try to answer... First of all, what are your goals? Do you and your partner want to build and sell digesters? Or design them for others to build and operate? Or provide training, information, and resources for end-users to be able to build their own? Or...? My i...
