Re: Drum Biofilter
hi, regarding drinking water power requirements - if 2gal/person/day is enough for drinking and cooking, then there-s litle reason to pump and filter more than that. A slow sand filter followed by a ceramic filter (e.g. Berkey filter black cartridge ) should do the job, without requiring high head o...

Re: biofilter media options / discussion
Bob - I wonder how would expanded perlite grains/sand behave ? It is a very light, completely inert, aerated media, with >90% porous space. It is used in thermal insulation and also as hydroponic culture media. I see few possible uses: - as a trickle down filter. - or replacing sand/gravel in a cons...

If there can be found a way to prevent worm compost bin to become anaerobic when significant amounts of toilet water are flushed through it, while stopping 80-90% of BOD and >50% of amonia, then it could become a great way to minimise wastewater treatment expenses. Followed by a small wetland could ...

I'm however curious about the required parameters (e.g. free volume, retention time, total area, flow speed, and whatever else is rlevant) a trickle filter should have for full blackwater treatment, either separately from greywater or all waste water together. And then choosing to treat it partially...

Solviva's flush toilet composting filter
I found this composting/filter that is claimed to handle 1.6gal/flush toilet water. It uses worms and has a rather large volume. Another amazing claim is that in 25 months of usage the level of compost did not raised, but it diminished instead from the initial 12 cuft of leaves and sawdust to 9 cu.f...

Does the system described in the document I pointed to look like a feasible possibility? I dont know, mabe. I think we use an average 180l (~50 gal) / day /person, yet the norms specify a minimum of 300 liter. I also know the cheapest aerated active sludge residential plant can be purchased for a b...

Yes, I'm interested in water recovery, to the level of making it acceptable for watering the garden. What "acceptable" means - food that is supposed to be cooked. Dominant in country side here are outhouses/pit latrines in old houses and open-bottom "septic" tanks for newer ones. Since we joined EU,...

Bob, is true that your waste-management design decisions might be very good, but what is a natural step for an ecological-conscious person might be a too large leap for humankind, or at least for most people in my country  That's why I'm trying to figure out is what parameters needs to have a ...

A few more questions
Hi again Bob, what is the role of pvc ribbons (those you clean on the video)? Wouldnt the dissolved oxigen flowing out of trickle filter be consumed anyway in the sludge at the bottom of the 2nd tank? Hopefully the bottom sludge will develop a small aerobic colony, without needing pvc ribbons on the...

biofilter media options / discussion
Hi Bob, I apreciate alot the work you do. I think a thread about various options of biofilter media would be interesting. Since I'll start experimenting a small (model) biofilter myself, here-s the type of media it will use. The woven polypropylene bags used to pack cereals or cement are woven with ...
